1. The Grant Family
According to Anne Craigen and Edward Banting, the
history of the Grant family in Canada began with "Red" Grant, who immigrated
from Scotland: "The Camerons with their two sons, Alexander and William,
emigrated from Glen Urquhart, Scotland about 1800-1802 to Pictou County,
Nova Scotia. Their daughter Jane was probably born at Fort Augustus after
their arrival in Canada. They settled near Mount Thom in Pictou County.
After a time John Cameron and his family moved to St. Andrews, Antigonish
County. After settling at St. Andrews, they erected a grist mill and a
work shop. Sometime after the Camerons settled at St. Andrews, another
Scot, Angus Grant, son of "Red" Grant from the Spey side, found his way
there. Being a millwright, he became associated with the Camerons in their
grist mill business and later became proprietor of the mill. He married
Jane Cameron, John's daughter. Their son, Alexander, later moved to Centreville,
Ontario, where he operated a flour and grist mill on the Centreville Creek,
Albion Township, Peel County (Lot 22, Con. 4). Alexander later moved to
Alliston, Simcoe County, Ontario and built a flour and grist mill in 1853
on the Boyne River, Essa Township, for William Fletcher (Lot 1, Con. 1).
He built two more mills, one in Bethesda, Simcoe County and another in
Utopia, Essa Township, Simcoe County, for James Spink (Lot 30, Con. 6).
In 1872 he helped to build the first Methodist Church in Utopia. He built
another mill in Thompsonville on the Nottawasaga River, Tecumseh Township
(Lot 9, Con. 13) which then he operated until his death."
